Test Method
Infrared spectrophotometry
Application
To test the petroleum, animal and vegetable oil in surface water, ground water, domestic water
and industrial waste water
Principle
According to GB/T16488 1996, the total extractive content can be measured by using carbon tetrachloride to
extract oil substance in water.
And the petroleum content can be tested by using the magnesium silicate to absorb the polar substance such
as animal and vegetable oil in total extractive.
Both of them are calculated by the absorbency of A2930, A2960 and A3030 which corresponding wave
number respectively lies in the spectrum band of 2930cm-1 (stretching vibration of C-H in CH2 group), 2960cm-1(stretching vibration of C-H in CH3 group) and 3030cm-1(stretching vibration of C-H in aromatic nucleus). The content of animal and vegetable oil is calculated by the difference between total
extractive and oil content.
