Overview 
Softening Point of Asphalt (Ring-and-Ball test apparatus) conforms to the ASTM D36 Standard Test Method for Softening Point of Bitumen (Ring-and-Ball Apparatus). The apparatus covers the determination of the softening point of bitumen in the range from 30 to 157°C [86 to 315°F] using the ring-and-ball apparatus immersed in distilled water [30 to 80°C] or USP glycerin (above 80 to 157°C).

1. The instrument is composed by bracket, which is made up by upper support plate, mid-support plate and lower support plate, test cup, steel ball locater, standard steel ball, flask and thermometer.

5.Bracket: It gets two pivots to contact upper support plate, mid-support plate and lower support plate and fix the distance 25mm. On the pivots, 51mm from mid-support plate there is a mark of scribed line which is as index of the height pouring water or glycerin.

6.Beaker: Volume 800ml, diameter is aboutφ90mm, height is no less than 140mm.

7.Thermometer: ASTM 15C and 16C.
